MBBS

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery is an under-graduate level professional degree programme which allows participants to practice medicine and surgery. Going by the nomenclature it seems MBBS are two degrees, however, it is granted as one. The MBBS course duration is of five and half years including a one-year mandatory residential internship programme. The MBBS course is conducted under semester system where students undergo theory and practical classes in nine semesters and four yearly exams followed by one year of rotational internship programme which constitutes training in different areas of medicine and surgery.

Eligibility for admission to MBBS course
⮚ There are only three medical entrances in the country viz. NEET UG, AIIMS MBBS and JIPMER MBBS. To obtain admission to MBBS course in the country and even outside the country candidates will be required to appear for NEET apart from AIIMS and JIPMER.
⮚ It is required of candidates to pass Class 12 with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Candidates also need to score a minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in aggregate while scoring qualifying marks in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually is mandatory.
⮚ In terms of age, candidates must be at least 17 years of age to appear for medical entrances. Candidates more than 25 years of age cannot take NEET 2019, however, they are eligible for AIIMS MBBS and JIPMER MBBS.

Career options after MBBS
During one year of internship that MBBS degree includes, students work with hospitals and healthcare centers as consultants, physicians, medical assistants in critical care units, and much more. They work in health campaigns by the government and help the public with awareness about diseases, medicines, health and fitness through conferences.

On completion of MBBS Internship, the students can get themselves registered as doctors by Medical Council of India (MCI). They can either apply for post-graduate degree in medical science i.e. MD/MS or continue working in the health sector as qualified doctors.

While pursuing further education in medical science, an MBBS degree holder can also associate with pharmaceuticals as research associates. Moreover, the option for taking Combined Medical Services Examination is always open for an MBBS graduate. They can be employed with the central government organizations including hospitals, defense sector, railways, and with the local/state government.

This is the age of super specialty! Just an MBBS Degree is not enough in today’s world of cut throat competition! After completing MBBS, graduates may go for the below mentioned traditional PG courses-

⮚ PG Diploma- 2 years long

Using the above mentioned PG courses, one may go for clinical or non clinical studies. PG courses can be used to specialize in a particular discipline/field.
