About B.tech
Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) is a professional undergraduate engineering degree programme awarded to candidates after completion of four years of study in the field. This undergraduate programme is your gateway to a career in engineering.

In India, a B.Tech degree is offered across various specialisations. Some of the more prominent ones are as follows:

⮚ Computer Science Engineering
⮚ Mechanical Engineering
⮚ Chemical Engineering
⮚ Aerospace Engineering
⮚ Civil Engineering
⮚ Electrical Engineering
⮚ Ceramic Engineering
⮚ Electronics & Communication Engineering
⮚ Instrumentation Engineering
⮚ Metallurgical Engineering
⮚ Petroleum Engineering
⮚ Electronics & Electrical Engineering

While all these specialisations offer bright prospects for students to get into different careers, computer science engineering is probably one of the most sought after nowadays. This is also reflected in the high cut off exam scores that top engineering colleges such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the Indraprastha Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) as well as some of the best central universities command from their respective applicants in order to enroll them for this programme.

In India, all technical programmes such as B.Tech, fall under the regulatory purview of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). Admissions to B.Tech programmes take place through national level/state-level/institute-level engineering entrance examinations. The top five engineering entrance exams taken by a large number of students each year are:

⮚ TS EAMCET
⮚ JEE Main
⮚ JEE Advanced
⮚ VITEEE

The Bachelors in Engineering (BE) degree programme also offers a similar orientation to students as the one offered by a B.Tech programme. In fact, such is the degree of overlap in eligibility criteria to colleges, subjects taught, recruiting companies and even job profiles offered during placements, that often students wonder whether these are the same.

Eligibility Criteria for BE/BTech
The basic eligibility requirement for admissions to any BTech programme is:

⮚ Candidates must have passed Class 10+2 exam from a recognised board with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as core subjects.
⮚ They must also have secured a minimum aggregate marks of 60% in the above subjects combined.
⮚ Please note that the BTech eligibility criteria would vary from institute to institute.

Career Prospects
Being a professional course, B.Tech also opens up several career opportunities for the students after the completion of the programme. The among them are:

Campus Placements
All engineering colleges have a dedicated placement cell that work towards getting the engineering graduates placed in reputed organizations. Generally, after B.Tech, students are hired by private companies for entry-level job roles in technical fields. Students, who take up jobs through campus placements, generally do so, in order to gain the relevant experience in their field before further studies.

PSU Jobs
After B.Tech students can also take up technical jobs in Public Sector Undertakings through the GATE / Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering. Many PSUs hire B.Tech students for entry-level jobs based upon their GATE score. A few PSUs such as CII, ISRO and BARC also conduct their own exams to screen B.Tech students for entry level jobs.

Private Companies
For students who do not want to opt for campus placements, they can also apply to different private companies for a job, after completing their B.Tech programme. Students can also take up employability tests such as AMCAT and eLitmus in order to prove their technical prowess and improve their chances of being selected for the job. After joining private companies in entry-level technical roles, students can gain the necessary knowledge and experience to earn promotions to rise the ranks of the corporate ladder.
